Abstract

Peter Elias Magennis was assistant general 1908-1919 and prior general of the order 1919-1931. During his time as assistant general,  Magennis spent time in the years 1911-1919 doing parish missions in the eastern part of the United States. During this time Magennis  involved himself in the Irish Freedom Movement aimed at securing the position of Ireland as an independent republic. He spoke to  many groups promoting this goal in words that were strong and obvious in their intent. His Irish activities brought him the fame that  elected him the president of the Friends of Irish Freedom. Magennis’ election as general brought an end to these activities and he was  clearly missed. As general, he made a number of visits to America.
