Defining the Responsibility of the Late Medieval Theologian:The Debate between John Kynyngham and John Wyclif
Abstract
During the years 1372 to 1374, a public disputation took place at Oxford between the Carmelite theologian John Kynyngham and the wellknown secular theologian, and later controversialist, John Wyclif. While a number of works have been attributed to Kynyngham, with the exception of a recent find, Kynyngham’s four determinations against Wyclif are all that have survived of his writings, despite an illustrious career. Kynyngham, a native of Suffolk, had entered the Carmelite order at Ipswich, and was at Oxford by 1372.
