Abstract

It is a widespread belief that the human being is in an attitude of constant search. It seeks to satisfy the most basic needs, be it for  the impulse of survival, or to achieve the tranquility of the soul so longed for. Man tends to reposition again and again the most  fundamental questions of life, mainly when he is affected by the experience of suffering and by the various contradictions that  emerge from coexistence in society. We have an opening to the Absolute that motivates us to seek, in the midst of various events,  the realities called perennial or eternal, because they correspond to the deepest appeal of the human soul. It is necessary to go on  a pilgrimage, to continue on the journey and, in order to speak in a language proper to the sacred writer, to follow the footsteps of  “the Beloved of our soul” (Song 3:1- 5). To be human necessarily implies to always be on the road, to embark on the path of inquiry.  The present work deals with this existential horizon of the human being from the standpoint of the Sacred Scripture, and  the most basic semantics of seeking in correspondence with the themes of thirst and God’s hiding. For such an attempt, the biblical  fragment of the Song of Songs 3:1-5; 5.2-6.3 serves as a scriptural basis. The great mystics, especially those of the Carmelite tradition, took root in this  attitude so typical of the just in the biblical perspective: being in the presence of God, expression of the desire to live in fidelity to the  Word, keeping it in a pure heart. Longing that uninstalls, forces us to go out in search, to be on the way out, to go on a pilgrimage, to climb the mountain.
